Qatar Condemns Israeli Strike That Killed Senior Hamas Leaders in Doha

Qatar has strongly condemned an Israeli airstrike carried out in its capital, Doha, that targeted senior Hamas leaders, killing at least two top officials and sparking regional alarm.

The Israeli military confirmed that its fighter jets struck Hamas’s political leadership in Doha, killing Khalil al-Hayya, the head of the group’s political bureau, and Zaher Jabarin, another senior official. Hamas sources said the leaders were attending a meeting on ceasefire negotiations related to the Gaza conflict when the strike occurred.

The attack took place on the evening of September 9, 2025, in central Doha, an unprecedented move that struck at the heart of Qatar’s role as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel has framed the operation as a “decisive action” against Hamas leadership, whom it accuses of directing cross-border attacks. By targeting the group’s political command structure outside of Gaza, Israel has extended its campaign beyond traditional battlegrounds.

Eyewitnesses reported multiple explosions in the capital, with buildings engulfed in flames and emergency responders scrambling to contain the damage. While the deaths of al-Hayya and Jabarin were confirmed, the fate of Khaled Meshaal—another senior Hamas figure reportedly present at the meeting—remains unclear.

In a strongly worded statement, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strike as a “reckless violation of sovereignty” and warned that it would not tolerate Israel’s “dangerous actions and persistent interference with regional security.” Doha underscored that targeting its territory was a direct assault on its independence and a threat to its role as a neutral mediator.

Qatar has long hosted Hamas’s political leadership and has played a central role in mediating ceasefires and channeling humanitarian aid into Gaza. Israeli strikes on Qatari soil mark a sharp escalation, risking not only the Gulf state’s mediation role but also broader diplomatic fallout across the region.

The Israeli strike in Doha has triggered a major diplomatic crisis, raising the prospect of a widening regional confrontation. While Israel celebrates a symbolic blow against Hamas leadership, analysts warn that undermining Qatar’s sovereignty could destabilize Gulf-Israel relations and complicate ongoing negotiations to end the Gaza war. The international community is now watching closely to see how Doha’s allies respond to what Qatar calls an intolerable violation of its security and independence.
