Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, received a United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) delegation in Mogadishu on Tuesday, with both sides discussing the ongoing transition and the country’s evolving political and security landscape.
The meeting comes as UNTMIS prepares to hand over responsibilities to Somali institutions, a process that carries high stakes for a nation still recovering from decades of civil war and facing a persistent insurgency. How the transition is managed will determine whether international support effectively bolsters long-term stability or leaves critical gaps in governance and security.
State Minister Omar hosted the UNTMIS delegation led by Officer-in-Charge Raisedon Zenenga, accompanied by Vikram Parekh. The talks focused on the next phase of engagement between Somalia and the United Nations.
The state minister emphasized Somalia’s firm commitment to a Somali-led transition. He underscored the importance of strengthening national institutions and consolidating gains achieved in peacebuilding and state-building.
He also noted that aligning international support with Somalia’s national priorities remains essential to ensuring sustainable progress and long-term stability.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced coordination and sustained engagement. They stressed the need for continued collaboration to support Somalia’s development trajectory and reinforce peace and stability across the country.
No specific timeline for the transition or immediate policy changes were disclosed during the readout.
