President Mohamud: Opposition lacks political vision since 2023

Somali President Hasan Sheikh Mohamud said opposition groups have failed to present a clear political vision since 2023, accusing them of relying solely on criticism rather than offering alternative proposals for the country’s future.

In an interview, the president said opposition politicians had not brought any concrete political initiatives to the negotiating table, instead limiting their position to rejecting government policies.

Since 2023, we have not seen them present a political vision that can be debated. They have not brought anything to the table beyond constant opposition,” Hasan Sheikh said.

The president also accused opposition figures of resisting some of the government’s key achievements, including the lifting of the United Nations arms embargo on Somalia and efforts that led to the country’s debt relief.

He said letters were sent to international partners expressing opposition to some of the government’s initiatives, and alleged that certain opposition politicians had at times prioritized foreign interests over Somalia’s national interests.

The interview also covered a range of sensitive issues, including the country’s electoral framework, security challenges, constitutional amendments, relations between the federal government and regional states, allegations of foreign interference, including claims involving Israel, and Somalia’s political future.
